The Greatest Granola – A Healthy Recipe for the Taste Conscious

Crunchy, sweet, salty and a major nutritional score, this is granola at its best. And as a breakfast lover, I’m a huge fan of granola. I pair it with our delicious plain Greek yogurt and a little honey for the perfect easy breakfast or snack. This particular mix is delicious, filling and actually good for you. It has only natural sugars (and not too many of those either), plenty of protein, omega-3s and of course, nutrient rich oats. My recipe is nut-free, but you can easily substitute ingredients to create your preferred flavor combination. And as an added bonus, it takes all of ten minutes to throw together (literally!) and another ten in the oven. Store for up to two weeks in an airtight container for the ultimate nutritious, on-the-go snack!

This recipe is inspired by Elizabeth Rider’s ‘Easy Healthy Homemade Granola Recipe’.

Classic Granola

Yield: One large container, or approximately 20 servings 


4 cups of oats

1 cup of raw pumpkin seeds

1/2 cup of flax seeds

1 cup of raisins

1 cup of dried cranberries

1 cup of shredded, unsweetened coconut

4 tbs of coconut oil

3 tbs of honey

2 tbs of maple syrup

1 1/2 tsp of cinnamon

1 1/2 tsp of vanilla extract

1-2 tsp of sea salt, to taste

2 tbs of water


In a large mixing bowl, combine all the dry ingredients. Mix them together using your clean hands, scooping downwards along the sides of the bowl and turning inwards.

Next add the oil, honey, syrup, vanilla and water and mix into the granola in the same manner. Make sure that all the ingredients are thoroughly blended.

Spread the granola out on an ungreased baking sheet and bake for 10-15 minutes, or until the granola is golden brown. Turn the sheet half way through the baking time, so that the granola cooks evenly.

Serve as is, with yogurt, or with the milk of your choice for a great cereal.

A note or two: I use a little water because I find it makes the mixing process easier, but feel free to leave it out if you don’t need it. Also, coconut oil is unfortunately a rarity here, so I used cholesterol-free canola oil. However, any light-flavored nutritious oil would work.
