Is it too early for this? A lovely red wine warmed with citrus flavors and infused with the perfect array of spices? I hope not, because I love a glass of mulled wine when the nights start to get colder. This delight of a winter beverage is just too warming and delicious to be left out of the holiday menu rotation! I’d say the season for mulled wine has arrived – or close enough!
This recipe is quick and easy to make and a great treat for friends and family alike. And, while it’s cooking, it will make your kitchen smell incredible! My husband had never tried mulled wine before, and it was a big hit. In fact, everyone we offered it to was impressed! Hope you enjoy this one as much as we did!

Yield: 3 glasses
1 bottle of red wine, such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Chianti
1 large orange
1 small lime
1/2 cup of sugar
1/2 tsp of ground nutmeg
1/2 tsp of allspice
1 large cinnamon stick
3 whole cloves
Carefully peel the orange and lime in large sections, reserve both the rinds, and juice the orange.
Place the juice, the lime rind, half the orange peel, sugar, nutmeg, allspice, cinnamon stick, and cloves in a large saucepan. Pour in enough wine (about 1/3 of the bottle) just to cover the sugar. Simmer for a few minutes, or until the sugar has dissolved.
Turn up the heat to high and maintain a gentle boil for 3 or 4 minutes, or until the wine has reduced slightly and the spices have infused the mixture.
Reduce the heat to simmer and mix in the rest of the wine. Heat the mixture for a few minutes.
Ladle into glasses and serve warm. Garnish with the remaining orange peel.
Tip: You don’t need to opt for an expensive wine here, as the cooking will alter its taste anyway. I used a mid to low range Cabernet, which worked perfectly!
